Presenter Bio
Joseph Trigg has served as the Police Chief for the Grand Rapids Police Department since June 22, 2026. Chief Trigg was born and raised in Muskegon, Michigan, and attended Grand Valley State University to study the fields of criminal justice and juvenile justice. He was hired by the GRPD in January 2001, after which he graduated from the Lansing Community College Police Academy.
Chief Trigg began working patrol in the North Service Area and moved to the East and South Service Areas when named Acting Sergeant, continuing as a patrol supervisor in the South Service Area after his promotion to Sergeant. The rank of Lieutenant carried with it assignments as a Watch Commander on nights and then commander of the Internal Affairs Unit, where he stayed for two years, until being promoted to Captain and assuming the role of commander of the South Service Area. In January 2023, Chief Trigg was selected as Deputy Police Chief, overseeing all field operations for the department. He began serving as the Interim Police Chief in March 2026, and after a nationwide search, Chief Trigg was selected as the department's new Police Chief on June 22, 2026.
Community outreach and engagement have been paramount throughout Chief Trigg's career, including his involvement with organizations and initiatives such as the Baxter Neighborhood Association, LINC UP, Youth with Potential: Creating a Path Forward, and the City of Grand Rapids SAFE (Safe Alliances for Everyone) Task Force. Chief Trigg is an active Board member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Grand Rapids, Children's Advocacy Center of Kent County, Alternative Directions, and Youth With Potential: Creating a Path Forward. He is a graduate of the department's Leadership Institute and holds memberships with the Kent County Chiefs of Police, Wester Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, state and international associations for Chiefs of Police, and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.
Chief Trigg has two children, both of whom are involved in the field of law enforcement. His son is a police officer and his daughter worked as a cadet, who is now pursuing the field of forensic science at Northern Michigan University.
